Japanese Geisha
Japanese geisha is an icon of Japan's past
and the secret societies that still exist today in Modern
Japan. In the past, it was harder to become a true Japanese
geisha and all Japanese geisha took pride in learning the arts,
music and even literature to become the best Japanese geisha
Japan had ever seen. However, nowadays, fewer and fewer true
Japanese geishas are found.
In Memoirs of a Geisha movie and Memoirs of
a Geisha book by Arthur Golden, Chiyo or Nitta Sayuri strived
to become the best Japanese geisha of her time. However, when
the war broke out, most of the traditional geisha in Japan
disappeared and anyone wearing Japanese kimonos could call
themselves Japanese geisha. The true meaning of Japanese geisha
faded. Today, in modern Japan, it is difficult to find truly
skillful Japanese geisha.

Japanese Geisha: as portrayed
in the Memoirs of a Geisha movie
Japanese geisha was the symbol of elegance,
skills, art, and fashion in old Japan. Japanese geisha was the
beauty of the time that all girls and women looked up to.
Traditional geisha in Japan are neither cortisans nor wives.
Japanese geishas were something in between. Japanese geisha
girls trained from a very young age to become skillful in all
forms of arts so that they would become the best Japanese
geisha.
